Beginner’s Guide to the telescope: Every Feature Explained

Apexeloptic2022-02-24T09:55:18+00:00
Telescope

A telescope’s most widespread use is its importance in astronomy. With the discovery of a telescope, it became possible to access the far corners of our Universe and capture radiations from all sorts of celestial bodies. It also became possible to observe the Moon and its phases, revolutionizing science.

Furthermore, telescopes can also be used in our daily lives for viewing distant objects with ease and convenience by enlarging them through a system of lenses. You can also view all the different planets and stars, their alignments in the night sky, and their positions through a good telescope. With the help of this beginner’s guide to the telescope, you will realize why a telescope is quite a treasure for astronomy lovers, hunters, or just enthusiastic stargazers.

Starry night

(1) What is the Key Features of a Telescope?

1. Main functions of Telescopes

A telescope makes far-off and distant objects appear enlarged, vivid, and straightforward. This primary function is carried out with the help of light gathering and resolution inside a telescope. The image is also magnified to a great extent before it reaches the viewer’s eye. Therefore, the primary function is to simplify the process of viewing things that are very far from the human eye’s normal vision.

2. Resolution of Telescopes

A telescope’s resolution is its ability to differentiate between two closely placed objects. The better resolution a telescope has, the more vivid images can be seen. Furthermore, high-resolution telescopes also showcase more details on far-off objects. They can be used for research purposes as well. Minute details can thus be captured and enlarged with the help of a high-resolution telescope.

3. Aperture of Telescopes

Since the light collection is one of the main functions a telescope performs, the light-collecting area is of great significance to the resolution of the final picture. The diameter of this area is called the aperture. Generally, telescopes with bigger apertures produce better quality images, and telescopes with smaller or narrower apertures have relatively less clear images of distant objects.

(2) Telescope Tutorial: How to Set-up and Use a Telescope?

If you are a new telescope owner and do not know how to set it up in the best way possible for excellent results, here are a few steps that you can follow for a smooth experience.

  • You need to make sure that you balance your telescope the right way and your finderscope is aligned correctly. This is done by loosening the knob on one side of the telescope and adjusting the counterweight to make sure the telescope stays wherever it is facing.
  • The second thing you need to do is adjust the scope by tightening the knob for the RA. A specific screw on top of your telescope will help you change and adapt your declination angle.
  • You need to make sure your scope stays in the middle. If it does not, loosen the screws on the clamps in the middle of your telescope and slide the telescope forward or backward to balance it correctly.

Adjusting your finderscope perfectly is also essential for observing planets and stars. If not adjusted correctly, you might not be able to see anything through your eyepiece. So, the following are some things you can do to make sure your finder scope is in place.

  • If you are using your telescope in the daytime, make sure to see through your finderscope and observe where the cross-section is. The same cross-section should be visible through your eyepiece. If not, your finder scope is not set correctly.

You can constantly readjust your finderscope with the help of the tiny screws present on the sides.

Using the telescope, you need to align it in the direction of the object you want to observe and position your eye on the eyepiece. You can then move the telescope around until you find what you want to keep and focus on it.

(3) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How to Focus a Telescope?

If blurriness is all you see while observing a planet, your telescope is likely out of focus. You can adjust focus and fixate on an object by turning the focus knobs and adjusting the telescope on low magnification power. By turning the focus knobs, you can change the distance between your telescope lens and the eyepiece, which can help in most cases.

2. How to Collimate a Telescope?

You can easily collimate a telescope by aligning all its components. You can perform collimation by focusing on a star and adjusting the focus knobs until you can see the lead in the form of a disc.

3. How to Maintain a Telescope/ How to Clean a Telescope?

Most people use compressed air and blowers to clean large dust particles and debris from the telescope. It is essential to keep the eyepiece clean for perfect vision. You can also use wet swabs to remove all the dust and dirt thoroughly.

(4) In Conclusion

All in all, a telescope is one of the most amazing wonders of science. If used properly, it can take you on super imaginative trips to the endless Universe.
